Free Seminars and Services for Job Seekers - 8/9/2010 TO 8/25/2010

The McHenry County Workforce Network offers free seminars and services for job seekers. All meetings are held at 500 Russel Court in Woodstock. Seating is limited and reservations are required. To reserve your spot for any of the seminars listed below, call 815-338-7100 x203. 
Self Assisted Career Guide is on August 4 from 1–3:00 p.m. Career planning basics will give you “direction” for your future and help you make the most of the changes that are evolving in the workforce. Learn how to use online resources/Illinois WorkNet/for career related assessments, and career research including Labor Market information to help you plan the next step in your career. Every job seeker will benefit from a focused career plan.
Portfolio, and Interview Seminar is on Tuesday, August 3 & 17 from 5 p.m. Learn what information belongs in your resume and what you should leave out. Topics include a discussion of the chronological and functional resume, cover letter writing, and how to email a resume. Learn the fundamentals of interview preparation and how to make the best impression. Topics include researching companies and salaries, dressing for the interview, body language, typical interview questions, salary negotiation, and following up after the interview.
Basic Computer is on Wednesday, August 18 from 11:30 – 2:30. This is a seminar for those with minimal workable knowledge using a computer. Topics include using a mouse, saving to a flash drive, Microsoft Word, email account creation, and internet usage. This is a hands-on workshop. Call to reserve one of eight computer stations.
Career Seminar Series by MCC Staff - None in August – check back in September.
Video Cam Practice Interview Sessions are held all day every Monday and Computer Basics Lab for entry level persons is held on Fridays from 1-3:30 p.m.
NEW- Veteran Job Search Workshop - every Monday 4 – 5 p.m @McHenry County Workforce Center/IDES Office
Network To Success Job Search Club is held on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 1-4 p.m. and provides a positive job search approach in a casual networking atmosphere. Job Club meetings are held at MCC’s SHAH Center, 4100 W. Shamrock Lane (off Route 31) in McHenry. Call the Resource Room at 815-338-7100 x203 for reservations to any of the following seminars:
August 11 - Is Your Cover Letter working for you?... or is it going no further than the prospective employer’s trash can? It’s a known fact that an employer spends on average 20 seconds reviewing your cover letter and resume…is your cover letter enticing the employer to look at your resume, resulting in an invitation for an interview? Attend this informative session…to learn how to improve your cover letter success rate! Linda Kasprzak, McHenry County Workforce Network will present.
August 25 - Retirement Plan Fundamentals/Distribution– Learn how you can proactively handle your money. This workshop will provide strategies for: choosing an appropriate retirement plan & distribution method; rolling funds into an IRA for continued tax deferral; and understanding retirement plan distribution rules. You will receive a workbook to help you assess your current situation and help you make sound financial decisions. Jeff Batt, McHenry Financial, will present.
